Is your fridge a little scary right now? Don’t run screaming! I have 4 easy tips for how to eco-clean your refrigerator with hard-working, food-safe Pro-Tek™. I’ll even share my secret tips with you for keeping it clean! This guide is just in time, too. October is Eco-Clean Your Fridge Month!

Why is a clean refrigerator important? Regular cleaning not only prevents the growth of yucky bacteria but also helps your refrigerator run more efficiently, which can save you money and is good for Mother Earth. Everyone wins! In this guide, Spotless and I will walk you through the four easy steps.

What You’ll Need to Clean Your Refrigerator

Before you begin, gather the following materials:

  • Warm water
  • Pro-Tek™ spray bottle – FREE with your purchase!
  • Pro-Tek™ Cherry, Pro-Tek™ Lemon, or EcoOrange™ (Pick your favorite scent!)
  • Clean cloths
  • Soft-bristle brush
  • Old bath towels for glass shelves
  • Empty dog bowl for fridge snacks (Spotless! He slipped that one onto the list.)
  • A cooler or insulated bags (to store perishable items)
  • Ice packs
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Your favorite drink, podcast, or playlist (Might as well make it a good time!)

Step 1: Preparation

Turn Off and Empty the Fridge

Start by turning on your playlist. Woohoo! Kitchen dancing! Then, turn off the power to your refrigerator. If possible, unplug it from the socket. Take everything out. I know that sounds like a lot of work, but it will make your job so much easier. Place perishable items in a cooler or insulated bags with ice packs. Toss scary leftovers in the trash!

Spotless is giving me puppy eyes, but no fridge snacks for you, Spotless! You can have a doggie treat, instead.

Remove Shelves and Drawers

Take out all removable parts like shelves, drawers, and bins. If your fridge has glass or plastic shelves, wrap them in towels and set them upright in a safe spot. That way, they won’t break.

Step 2: Cleaning the Inside

Pre-Clean Surfaces

Eeew! Is that dried up tomato soup on your fridge floor? Time for that to go away. Use a soft-bristle brush or a cloth to remove any loose crumbs or dried up food. Be gentle to avoid scratching. You can also use your vacuum as long as all crumbs are dry. Don’t vacuum up wet messes!

Spray with Pro-Tek™

Make a 10:1 dilution of Pro-Tek™ by following the measuring lines on your Pro-Tek™ spray bottle. Pour in 1.75 ounces Cherry, Lemon or Eco-Orange. Fill the rest of the bottle with clean water. For larger or smaller bottles, use this easy dilution chart.

Spray the whole inside. Let it sit for fifteen minutes while eco-friendly Pro-Tek™ does the hard work for you. Meanwhile, wash the drawers and shelves in warm, soapy water.

Next, wet a clean cloth or sponge with warm water and wipe down all interior surfaces. Pro-Tek™ has done its job!

Tackle Tough Stains

For stubborn stains or spills, zap with another round of Pro-Tek™. You may have to clean layer by layer if it’s been a while since your last cleaning.

Clean Gaskets and Seals

Wipe down the rubber gaskets and seals around the door with a clean cloth dampened with warm soapy water. Rinse and dry thoroughly.

Step 3: Cleaning the Outside

Pre-Clean Surfaces

Remove photos, magnets, and masterpieces from your little local artists. Man, these are all great memories. Here’s the sombrero magnet from Cancun! Look at this cute pic of Spotless when he was a puppy!

Wipe Down the Outside Door

Spray Pro-Tek™ over the exterior and wipe down with a dry cloth, paying special attention to handles and buttons. Whether you have stainless steel or vinyl, eco-friendly Pro-Tek™ brings out the natural shine. Who knew a fridge could be so beautiful?

Clean the Grille and Coils

Use a vacuum cleaner or a brush attachment to remove dust and debris from the condenser coils and the grille at the bottom or back of the refrigerator. Clean coils help your fridge run more efficiently!

Step 4: Reassemble and Organize

Plug Your Fridge in!

Time to turn your fridge back on and check the temp. The most eco-friendly temperature setting is between 35 – 38 degrees Fahrenheit.

Dry and Reassemble

Make sure shelves and drawers are thoroughly dry before putting them back in. Dry any glass or plastic parts to prevent streaks.

Organize Items

As you return items to the refrigerator, take the opportunity to organize them. It makes the fridge so much more fun! Dedicate shelves to drinks, leftovers, fresh fruits and veg, and meat and cheese. Wipe down bottles and containers as needed before placing them back in.

That’s it! Look at that gorgeous, efficient, eco-clean fridge. You did a great job, got in some good dancing, some doggie love, and enjoyed a refreshing drink to boot! And you can feel extra good knowing your clean refrigerator is with eco-friendly, food-safe Pro-Tek™.

Maintaining a Clean Fridge all Year Long: Secret Tips from Clara

  • Whenever possible, take food items out of their boxes and bags and put them in clear, eco-friendly plastic bins. That way, you can see exactly what you have and use it up before it spoils.
  • Before you plan your weekly menu, check your fridge for what needs to be eaten up. You’ll save money and cut down on waste!
  • Wipe up spills right away before they have a chance to dry out and get cold.
