Is Your Fridge a Little Scary? Don’t Run Screaming!
Halloween is here, and your refrigerator might be hiding more frightful surprises than your neighbor’s haunted house. Before you bolt for the door, remember: cleaning your fridge doesn’t have to be a horror story. With four easy eco-cleaning steps—and the help of hard-working, food-safe Pro-Tek™—you’ll have a refrigerator so clean it could pass as a Halloween treat.
Why a Clean Fridge is No Trick
A dirty fridge isn’t just spooky—it can harbor bacteria, waste energy, and even raise your electric bill. Cleaning it regularly keeps your food safe, your fridge running efficiently, and is good for Mother Earth. Everyone wins!
Did you know? In the 1800s, people carved turnips instead of pumpkins for Halloween. Just imagine finding one of those petrified veggies in the back of your fridge. Regular cleaning ensures no long-forgotten “science experiments” are lurking in the dark.
In this guide, Spotless and I will walk you through the four easy steps to banish the ghosts of leftovers past.
What You’ll Need to Get Started
Before you begin, gather these cleaning “charms and potions”:
Warm water
Pro-Tek™ spray bottle – FREE with your purchase
Pro-Tek™ Cherry, Lemon, or Eco-Orange™ (choose your favorite scent)
Clean cloths and soft-bristle brush
Old towels for glass shelves
A cooler or insulated bags with ice packs for perishables
A vacuum cleaner
An empty dog bowl for fridge snacks (Spotless slipped that one in)
Your favorite drink, playlist, or podcast (because even witches dance while they work)
Step 1: Conjure Your Cleaning Prep
Turn Off and Empty
Turn on your playlist and get the kitchen dance party started. Then, unplug your fridge and remove everything inside. Place perishables in a cooler with ice packs. Toss frightening leftovers before they come back to haunt you.
(Spotless just gave me his best puppy-dog eyes, but sorry buddy, no fridge snacks. A dog treat will have to do.)
Remove Shelves and Drawers
Take out removable parts such as shelves, drawers, and bins. Wrap glass shelves in towels and set them upright in a safe spot to prevent breaking.
Step 2: Exorcise the Mess Inside
Pre-Clean Surfaces
That dried tomato soup at the bottom of the fridge looks like it belongs in a crime scene! Sweep away crumbs and dry spills with a brush, cloth, or vacuum (for dry messes only).
Spray with Pro-Tek™
Mix a 10:1 dilution: 1.75 ounces of Pro-Tek™ Cherry, Lemon, or Eco-Orange plus water in your Pro-Tek™ spray bottle. Spray the interior thoroughly and let it sit for 15 minutes while you wash drawers and shelves in warm, soapy water.
Tackle Tough Stains
For stubborn spots, hit them with another round of Pro-Tek™. You may need to work layer by layer if it’s been a while since your last deep clean.
Clean Gaskets and Seals
Don’t let mold monsters move in. Wipe gaskets with a cloth dampened in warm, soapy water, then rinse and dry thoroughly.
Step 3: Bewitch the Exterior
Pre-Clean Surfaces
Remove photos, magnets, and kid art. These are treasures, but you’ll want a clear canvas before you start.
Wipe Down Doors
Spray Pro-Tek™ on the exterior and wipe clean, focusing on handles and buttons. Whether stainless steel or vinyl, Pro-Tek™ brings out the natural shine.
Clean the Grille and Coils
Use a vacuum or brush to remove dust and cobwebs from the coils and grille at the back or bottom. Clean coils keep your fridge running efficiently—no energy vampires allowed.

Step 4: Reassemble and Organize
Plug In and Dry
Turn your fridge back on and make sure shelves and drawers are thoroughly dry before replacing them. The most eco-friendly temperature setting is between 35–38 degrees Fahrenheit.
Organize Items
As you restock, dedicate shelves for specific foods like drinks, produce, leftovers, and meats. Wipe down containers before placing them inside. A tidy fridge is less likely to become haunted with waste.
Spotless tried to sneak a paw into the candy drawer, but even ghosts know chocolate is off-limits for dogs. Nice try, pup.
